Day

What Is Day?

A day is a unit of time. Most people use it to mean a full cycle of daytime and night. In everyday life, one day usually means 24 hours in a row.

We use days to plan school, work, travel and events. Calendars are built from days, grouped into weeks, months and years.

Definition

In modern timekeeping, a day is usually defined as:

  • 1 day = 24 hours
  • 1 day = 1 440 minutes
  • 1 day = 86 400 seconds

This length is based on how long it takes Earth to turn once around its axis, from one noon to the next noon. This is called a solar day.

Scientists sometimes use more exact types of days, such as the mean solar day which is an average over a long time. For normal daily life, we simply use 24 hours.

History / Origin

People have used the idea of a day for thousands of years. Early humans noticed that light and dark repeat in a regular pattern, so they used this cycle to measure time.

Ancient cultures like the Egyptians and Babylonians divided the day into smaller parts. Over time, these parts became hours, minutes and seconds.

By the time of mechanical clocks in Europe, the 24 hour day was common. Later, scientists created very accurate clocks based on atoms. They fixed the second as the basic unit, then defined the day as exactly 86 400 seconds.

Symbol & Abbreviation

The unit day is written in a few short forms:

  • day or days in full words
  • d as the main symbol used in science and engineering

Examples:

  • 3 d means 3 days
  • 0.5 d means half a day, which is 12 hours

The day is not an official SI unit, but it is allowed to use with SI units because it is very common and useful.

Current Use Around the World

Today the day is used everywhere in the world. It is one of the most basic units of time in daily life.

Common uses include:

  • Calendars days are the building blocks of weeks, months and years
  • Work and school workdays, school days, days off and holidays
  • Travel and shipping delivery time in days, travel days, hotel stays per night and day
  • Medicine take medicine twice a day or for 7 days
  • Science and weather daily temperature, daily rainfall, day length in different seasons
  • Finance interest per day, payment due in 30 days

Most countries use the same basic length of a day. However, legal and cultural ideas of a day can differ, such as what counts as a working day or a holiday.

Example Conversions

Here are some simple conversions using 1 day = 24 hours.

Days to hours

  • 1 day = 24 hours
  • 2 days = 48 hours
  • 3.5 days = 3.5 × 24 = 84 hours

Hours to days

  • 12 hours = 12 ÷ 24 = 0.5 day
  • 24 hours = 1 day
  • 72 hours = 72 ÷ 24 = 3 days

Days to minutes

  • 1 day = 1 440 minutes
  • 0.25 day = 0.25 × 1 440 = 360 minutes

Days to seconds

  • 1 day = 86 400 seconds
  • 0.1 day = 0.1 × 86 400 = 8 640 seconds

Days and longer times

  • 1 week = 7 days
  • 30 days is about 1 month, depending on the month
  • 365 days in a common year
  • 366 days in a leap year

Units of time that are closely related to the day include:

  • Second (s) the base SI unit of time. 86 400 seconds = 1 day
  • Minute (min) 60 seconds. 1 440 minutes = 1 day
  • Hour (h) 60 minutes. 24 hours = 1 day
  • Week 7 days
  • Month usually 28, 29, 30 or 31 days, depending on the month
  • Year usually 365 or 366 days in the calendar

In astronomy there are also special kinds of days, such as the sidereal day, which measures how long Earth takes to spin once compared to distant stars.

FAQs

Is a day always exactly 24 hours long

For clocks and calendars, we treat a day as exactly 24 hours. In nature, the true solar day changes slightly because Earths rotation is not perfectly steady. Scientists use averages and small corrections to handle this, such as leap seconds.

What is a solar day

A solar day is the time from one noon to the next noon at the same place on Earth. It is based on the position of the Sun in the sky. Our civil day of 24 hours is based on the average solar day.

What is a sidereal day

A sidereal day is the time it takes Earth to turn once compared to distant stars, not the Sun. A sidereal day is a little shorter than 24 hours, about 23 hours 56 minutes.

What is a calendar day

A calendar day is one full day on the calendar, from midnight to the next midnight. It includes both daytime and nighttime hours.

What is a business day

A business day usually means a working day, often Monday to Friday, not counting weekends and some public holidays. The exact rules can change by country or company.

Why do we have 365 or 366 days in a year

Earth takes about 365.24 days to go once around the Sun. To keep our calendar in step with the seasons, we use years of 365 days most of the time, and add 1 extra day every 4 years. That extra day creates a leap year with 366 days.

Can a day be longer than 24 hours

In some special rules, such as daylight saving time changes or when crossing time zones, the counted hours between two midnights can seem more or less than 24. But the defined unit of a day for science and most uses stays 24 hours.
